Apple supplier puts to bed the IPhone 15 Pro's solid-state buttons rumors

10 May 2023
The rumored solid-state volume buttons for the iPhone 15 Pro are coming to an end, ending the ongoing "will it or won't it" debate. Rumors that Apple would revert to normal, clickable buttons on its next-generation devices and cancel the project have recently surfaced, originating from a variety of different sources.

That is almost confirmed by a new piece of information today. Due to confidentiality agreements, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic cannot simply reveal that Apple was its customer for this technology. In addition, it must inform investors of milestones or setbacks, and the latter is precisely what the company explains in a new shareholder letter.

"Another item that we referenced in past investor letters as being booked for presentation this fall is not generally expected to come to advertise according to plan" is the specific statement from the letter, and the item being referred to was of the HPMS assortment.

Apple supplier pretty much confirms the death of the iPhone 15 Pro's solid-state buttons

For Cirrus Logic, the term "high-performance, mixed-signal" refers to the haptic drivers for Apple's Taptic Engine found in iPhones. On the off chance that the presentation of strong state buttons could never have been dropped by Apple, the iPhone 15 Ace would accompany two extra Taptic Motors to give the haptic criticism to the false fastens.

Obviously, Cirrus Logic did not explicitly state that it was the supplier of these in a previous shareholder letter. Apple is Cirrus Rationale's biggest client, representing 78% of its income in the 2022 financial year.

Ming-chi Kuo, a veteran source of Apple-related leaks and rumors, claims that "unresolved technical issues before mass production" prevent the iPhone 15 Pro from having solid-state buttons.

The IPhone 15 Pro is expected to feature an Action button in place of the ring/mute switch, although the volume buttons will continue to be of the standard variety. This Activity button will be completely adaptable, for what it's worth in the Apple Watch Ultra.

Analyst Jeff Pu believes that Apple may not have completely given up on the idea of solid-state volume buttons. Instead, he believes that the company will simply postpone the introduction of the technology until next year and aim to include it in the iPhone 16 Pro.
